According to the Colorado–based Brewers Association in order to be considered craft beer the following criteria must be met: 

• The brewery cannot distribute more than 6 million barrels of beer per year. 
  
• The brewery must be independent, meaning that less than 25% of the brewery is owned by a non-craft beer brewery. 
  
• The brewery must also be traditional, meaning the majority of the beers produced by the brewery must consist of innovative brewing ingredients.
